Stitch Fix Summer 2016

I got rid of all subscription boxes/services a few months ago because I felt like my life was slowly filling up with random stuff I had no use for. The idea of getting makeup samples every month was really intriguing and exciting at first, but when you have boxes full of sample size products you’ll never get through, especially with new ones coming in every month, it loses it’s appeal. I always liked the idea of the personal stylist services, and loved DailyLook Elite while I did it, but similarly I couldn’t justify getting new things every month. When I originally looked into stitch fix I was only going to do it once for the honeymoon, but when I saw that they had options to get fixes every month, every other month, quarterly, or just on demand I was hooked, finally a service I could sign up for and not feel overwhelmed with the amount of stuff they sent me. I signed up for the quarterly service and just received my second box and wanted to share what I got. If you are interested in signing up for stitch fix you can use my referral link (or just go straight to the site if you’d prefer).
Stitch Fix Navy Top

Moni Studded Short Sleeve Blouse | $54.00 | Returned

I was uncertain about this shirt the second I opened the box, but on first glance through my fix I considered purchasing the full thing and I thought I could be happy with this if I paired it correctly. That was all before I tried it on, instantly I knew I would be returning it because the sleeves were too tight around my arms, they actually hurt and I only had the thing on for all of a minute for this picture. When I first came out in it Bryan just said “no”, so it was pretty unanimous that this was just not for me.
Stitch Fix Red and Navy Maxi Dress

Brian Knit Maxi Dress | $78.00 | Returned

This dress was super comfortable and I really wanted to like it, but the color is just not right for me, the bright cool tone red does nothing for me so if I had kept this it never would have gotten worn in my closet.
Stitch Fix Navy Sweater

Evie Draw String Funnel Neck Sweatshirt | $64.00 | Kept

The second I saw this I knew I would be keeping it assuming it fit well, the second I put it on I knew it would be my new favorite sweatshirt, and the second I walked out for Bryan to take my picture he said “that looks like you” and it was a done deal. I will be living in this sweatshirt now!
Stitch Fix Multicolored Top

Yorken Scoop Neck Top | $44.00 | Returned

I had a really hard time with this one, I went back and forth on whether or not I was going to keep it, actually looking at the picture now part of me wishes that I had, but I ultimately returned it because I was only keeping one other thing and while I like this top, it isn’t “me” in the same sense so many other things in my closet are and I feel like if I bought it I would skirt around it most days.
Stitch Fix Gold Leaf NecklaceHadid Layered Leaf Necklace | $28.00 | Returned

I went back and forth on this necklace. I really liked it and if I had kept more and made this into a bigger shopping event I would have kept it, but when I ended up keeping just the sweatshirt I couldn’t justify keeping the necklace. I’m not even sure if that makes any sense, but it does (mostly) in my head, so we’re just going with it.

That’s what I got this quarter from Stitch Fix, do you subscribe to a similar service, what did you get this month?

Everyday Makeup Routine

I mentioned the other day that I have simplified most of my daily routines, one of which was my daily makeup routine. Although I still go to my larger collection for special occasions, my everyday makeup routine has been simplified and today I wanted to share it and some of the tricks I use to make it look perfect every day.

Step 1: Moisturize
No Makeup IMG_7427
Starting out with a clean face I apply moisturizer all over to balance out the harsh dry air in the winter time. I’ve been using the Aveeno Positively Radiant Daily Moisturizer for quite awhile now and I absolutely love it because it doesn’t leave my skin feeling oily and I can easily apply my makeup on top of it.

Steps 2 & 3: Prime and Eye Shadow
IMG_7429 IMG_7432 IMG_7439 IMG_7440
Next I prime my entire face, lately I’ve been loving the the Maybelline Master Prime Blur + Smooth and although I don’t use a ton of drugstore products these days when I find a good one I cling to it like this one. At the same time I prime my eyes with my tried and true Urban Decay Primer Potion. Once my face is ready for makeup I like to start with my eye shadow, because applying eyeshadow before foundation allows you to clean up imperfections later, it’s like a built in magic eraser! Right now I’m using the Tarte Apple of my Eye palette grabbing the auburn color for my crease, making sure to only sweep it about halfway over my eye with windshield wiper motions because bringing the darkest color too far in only accentuates dark circles, and then I do little circular motions to build up the product in my outer corner. Next I grab the lightest color in the palette and swipe it across my entire lid to brighten everything up. I love this simple look for everyday.

Steps 4 & 5: Foundation, Conceal and Touch Up
IMG_7444 IMG_7453IMG_7456 IMG_7459
Now it’s time for foundation! I’ve been using the Real Techniques makeup sponge lately to apply my Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer all over my face. Then I apply my Bare Minerals BareSkin Concealer in a large triangle under my eye, bringing the product all the way down in this shape and over past the outside of your eye helps cover up dark circles and draw the eye away from this problem area. After blending the concealer in I will go back in with the brushes I used to apply my eyeshadow and add a little bit extra product in case I cleaned up too much during concealing. When I do this I never add more eyeshadow to my brush, I just use the leftover product on the brush to add a touch more pigment.

Steps 6, 7, & 8: Powder, Add Color, and Set
IMG_7462 IMG_7466 IMG_7467 IMG_7469
I love cream products for their coverage and ability to sink into the skin rather than sit on top of it leaving it looking dry, but to keep it put all day I go over my whole face with a light hand of powder, lately I’ve been using the Bare Minerals Matte Foundation. Then making a lovely fishy face I apply the Benefit Hoola Bronzer to my face using the 3E method to hit the outline of my upper face, under my cheekbones, and under my neckline. I add a little more color to my face with one of the Maybelline Master Highlight Blushes, and then finally set all these products with another one of my tried and true favorite products, the Urban Decay De-Slick Setting Spray.

Steps 9 & 10: Mascara and Lips
IMG_7472 IMG_7475
Once the setting spray has dried I go in with the final products of my everyday makeup routine, my mascara, currently Cover Girl Lash Blast, and my lip color, currently Maybelline Color Whisper in Berry Ready.

And that’s the final look that I wear everyday. What are your go to everyday products? Do you go for a full face, or something simpler day to day?

Top 7 Products I’ve Used Up Recently

As I mentioned earlier this week I’ve been cleaning out a bunch of my things so my drawer of products I’ve used up or just are generally getting rid of has started overflowing. I have done empties posts in the past when I start filling up this box, but this time it didn’t seem like a good idea to go through all of the products in there because there were so many, especially because there are so many non empties in there as well. Instead I picked out my favorite products among the empties to share.

Aveda Pure Abundance Style Prep Spray

I’ve talked about this stuff before, it is an absolute miracle product for those of us with fine hair. It plumps every hair from the root and gives natural volume and fullness to my hair that is usually so thin and dull. The best part is it does it all without weighing it down.

Dr. Brandt Pores No More Vacuum Cleaner Mask

This mask is really fun, it starts changing color as it is working and is honestly kind of fun to watch as it happens. Every time I use this mask I can really tell that it is working and feel the difference in my skin afterwards.

Lancome Advanced Genifique Youth Activating Concentrate

I got a sample of this last year for Christmas and then after falling in love with it used up some Sephora points to get a couple more samples of it. I can definitely tell the difference when I am using this serum versus when I am not. It definitely keeps my skin feeling fresh and young.

Olay Regenerist Luminous Tone Perfecting Cream

Another amazing product I’ve been using for awhile now and am absolutely in love with, whenever I am done with the rest of my skin care routine I love being able to put on this moisturizer and feel it sink into my skin and leave it velvety soft.

Beauty Blender

Who hasn’t heard of the beauty blender before? This thing is amazing, I recently picked up the Rite Aid version and instantly regretted it and Amazon Primed myself another Beauty Blender, there is just no substitute (I’ve heard the Real Techniques one is good, trying it out soon). I have gone back and forth between brushes and this, but this usually wins out because it just leaves my makeup looking so natural.

Pixi Bronzer in Summertime

This bronzer came in one of my either Birchbox or Ipsy bags (honestly don’t remember, sorry!) and at first it just sat in my drawer because I was using a different one, but as soon as I started using it I couldn’t put it down. It is the perfect amount of light bronzing without making me look orange or overly bronzed and I love it.

Cover Girl Clump Crusher Mascara

I’ve gone through many a tube of this mascara and I don’t think that this one will be my last at all. I’ve used lots of high end and drugstore mascara’s and this is by far my favorite. It looks natural, but still adds length and fullness to my lashes without leaving them clumpy or anything.

What products have you used up recently that you can’t wait to go repurchase again?

Organizing to Minimize Decision Fatigue

One of the goals I had for my time off this month was to clean and organize all of the things in my house. I ended up with a bit of a combination between doing it to just minimize and clean up and doing it to make my life simpler and more straight forward. I’ve heard a lot in the past about decision fatigue, but it was this video from Marie Forleo about Decision Detox that made me realize I needed to organize not only because I needed to, but also to simplify my day to day life. So I decided to clean up and organize in a way that removes the decisions I need to make on a daily basis. Today I wanted to share a couple of the areas of my life that I was able to simplify and remove decisions from.

Daily Makeup Routine

I have a lot of makeup, definitely more than I need, and although I’ve been working to use it up and get rid of things I don’t need anymore the fact remains that I have a lot of makeup. Every day when I am doing my makeup I sit there and look at all the options and pick what I want to use that day. Almost every day I end up using a different foundation, concealer, blush, eyeshadow palette, etc. because I can. So with this cleaning I decided to pick out a daily makeup routine and put it in a separate top drawer so for my everyday I can just use that one routine (switching things out when I use them up or am ready for a change of color) and on days when I want to do a little extra can go back to all the other makeup I have and the way I did makeup before.

Nighttime Beauty Routine

Similarly to my makeup routine, my nighttime beauty routine was starting to add too many decisions to my life. I have always had a drawer of extras and things I will be using in the future to keep the drawer with the actual items I use daily separated, but that drawer was starting to get convoluted. I had speciality things in there like face masks that I use every once in awhile. I also had so many options, 3 different moisturizers, 2 different face serums, an exfoliating wash, regular face wash, and a makeup removing wash, plus makeup removing wipes. Every night I would pick out a different set of products and sometimes I would end up without because I was too tired to deal with it. Now I not only have separated out specialty once in awhile products out, but I have also narrowed it down to one product for each use for each day so I never have to decide what to use.

IMG_7359Have you ever cleaned up an area of your home not just to tidy and organize, but also to streamline your day to day life?

Let’s Talk about Subscription Boxes

Subscription boxes! I love them, you love them, we all love them. After all what isn’t to love about a box full of fun things showing up on your doorstep every month? You pay an amount that is clearly less than the products you receive and then you sit back and wait for it to feel like Christmas every month. They can be a little addicting though and I found myself a month ago receiving so many packages I knew something had to change.

A month ago I was getting the following:

  • Ipsy every month
  • Birchbox every month
  • Pop Sugar Must Have box every month
  • Daily Look Elite style box every month
  • Rocksbox every month
  • Fabletics basically every month
  • Blue Apron every week

And that’s when I took a step back and realized I might have a problem. Did I really need this much stuff in my life? I’ve been trying to minimize in my life, and although that does involve getting new things because I’m exchanging quality for quantity, it most certainly did not make sense to be receiving so much stuff every month. That is when I decided to take a step back and rethink each subscription, if I needed it, what I used it for, and if I how I should use it going forward.

Ipsy vs Birchbox

To be fair when I first got Ipsy and Birchbox I always planned on getting both of them for just a year and then deciding which I actually wanted and cancelling the other. That is still the plan, and I feel good about keeping both until January when I’ll choose one or the other, although I am less sure every month which one I’ll be keeping. After the first couple of months I was sure it would be Birchbox, but Ipsy has been making a comeback lately, so this one may come down to the wire, but I promise I’ll pick one for 2106.

Pop Sugar Must Have vs Fab Fit Fun

I like getting the Pop Sugar box because it has a wide variety of things that make it worth it even while keeping either Ipsy or Birchbox, but I don’t think I need this random stuff every month. So I decided that once my current set of boxes is up (around January as well) I’m going to switch to the Fab Fit Fun box instead. It is a pretty comparable box except it comes once a quarter instead of once a month so that seems like a good compromise.

I had a three month trial of Rocksbox and it was actually at the end of that when I had this freak out about how many boxes I was getting each month. As soon as I was faced with paying for Rocksbox I cancelled it. The short of that one is that $20 a month seemed like a lot for me when I don’t buy the pieces and just wear them once. It was nice that the box got me wearing jewelry slightly more often, but it wasn’t a significant enough change to make it worth $20 a month so I just cancelled it.

Daily Look Elite, Fabletics, and other Clothing Subscriptions

I went crazy with Fabletics the first few months I had the service because I was obsessed, but now i have quite a bit of stuff so while I still imagine I will order from them from time to time, most months I just don’t need anything. As for other clothing subscriptions, I have loved my Daily Look Elite boxes (and have always wanted to try Stitch Fix) but I just can’t justify getting one of these each month and buying things from it, so for right now I am going to skip every other month of these and see in the future if I want to cut back to every third month or something more along those lines. Basically I love these services, I just don’t need them every month.

Food (Blue Apron and such)

I get Blue Apron and absolutely love it, but we are trying to skip every third week or so right now so we can try other recipes and not be so stuck to Blue Apron. I have also always wanted to try some of the other snack subscription boxes, but for now I am telling myself no, because I don’t need more boxes and I have plenty of snack options else where.

The Final Verdict

So if you counted Blue Apron as four times a month when I was getting it once a week I was getting 10 things a month for awhile there! Now with this new plan (which will be fully implemented come 2016) I’ll be getting more like 15 things every quarter which is half what I was getting. It still feels like a lot, but it’s definitely a step in the right direction. How do you feel about subscription boxes? Have you gone crazy and subscribed to them all or stayed away completely?

Life in Music

I’ve always been all about music. It’s crazy how the right song can just make your day or explain all your feelings. When I was younger I was really into music and then sometime during college I kind of lost that and stopped finding new songs. I basically ended up in music rut for a few years, and then I started pole dancing. And ever since then I have been really into music again, constantly listening to new songs and listening to different genres. My recent playlist has me rocking out every day so I wanted to share it.

My music taste lately has been kind of similar to my fashion taste and just where I am at in my life lately. I’m all about having fun, letting loose, and being myself and I think this playlist really captures that. There are also some dark, rock, or just generally less than peppy songs on their too, but I’m just overall in love with this playlist and I rock out to it every day! And speaking of capturing the fun free spirit within me lately, I dyed my hair pink!! I have wanted pink hair since I was in middle school, and that dream has finally become a reality and I am in love.

What are your favorite songs right now? What songs can you not help but rock out to?

I am a wanderer

I can not be defined. You can not describe me in one simple sentence. I can’t be summed up and placed in a neat little package, wrapped up with a bow and set on a shelf.

I am changing every day. I am constantly learning and growing. My feelings, thoughts, expressions, and experiences are ever evolving. What I loved yesterday I may hate today. What was my favorite activity as a child may seem foreign to me now. The most important thing in the world to me a year ago may be at the end of my priority list now.

Life is a journey and I am the adventurer following the path or stepping off of it and paving a new direction through the trees. Sometimes I end up at the beach and hangout for awhile relaxing and basking in the sun and sweet scent of salt in the air, yet other days I get rushed along into a winding maze or find myself lost in a desert with no sense of where to go next. No matter where I am today, or where I find myself tomorrow I know that there will be more beaches and deserts in my future and each will teach me new lessons, shape me in new ways, and present their own challenges to be faced.

You can note that I am a cautious thinker who leaps and never looks back once a decision has been made as you notice how with each intersection I seem to weigh my options then almost out of nowhere turn and run in the direction I have chosen never glancing over my shoulder to see how the other route might be fairing. It is possible to say that I am the kind of adventurer who needs to take a break and sit and enjoy the views and the present moment from time to time. While that all may be true, you cannot call me a beach bum, forest dweller, or maze runner because tomorrow I may be in a different place, facing a different challenge, and choosing a different path.

Sure there are traits that I carry with me, items in my tote that I hold close to my heart, but I have given some up before, made space for new things. Of course there are regions that I prefer to end up in and shelters I always run to when I find myself in familiar places. I have safety nets and common grounds, but even they are ever changing and evolving. I linger in some environments more than others and have opinions on which are better, but I can be swayed, I can be turned and persuaded while staying grounded to my roots.

I am a wanderer. I am a wonderer.

I am simply me.
